Lost mountain hike – softypapa life adventures – photo 11

Dark Japanese cedar forest

This adventure began after a chance sighting of what appeared to be a metal roof amidst a tangle of green, a sure sign in this part of Japan of an abandoned green tea farm. I spotted the roof while walking slowly along a mountain road high above the farm and on the other side of the valley. With no easy access in the immediate vicinity I had to hike in from further up the canyon where the slope of the mountain was slight enough to allow a safe decent to the chill river. I had to cross the river several times as I made my way down the gorge, encountering two previously unseen abandoned farms along the way. I also had a very close encounter with a large Japanese Serow (kamoshika in Japanese) which I discovered at close quarters which gave me a bit of a shock. A troop of Japanese snow monkeys were also spotted in the trees including a mother monkey who eyed me with suspicion as she groomed her baby. Altogether this was a very interesting and pleasant hike, with abundant evidence of the former farming activity which had once been going on here as well as some striking examples of the area’s curious natural landscape. I hope to visit the area again during the spring to search for giant toads and the first emergence of insects ahead of the warm summer season.

The Path of Wildness is easy to find
The course of a stream
Leaves blown in the wind
A beast’s track through the brush
And the direction of our first inclination

The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don’t bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.
