A life of courage, joy and independence.

Going Alone – Where ma took control of the family

As the family began to fall to pieces – grandpa dead and buried besides the road, Tom clearly of a mind to leave the family, Rose of Sharon’s good-for-nothin’ husband showing his true colors…and just when the girl is on the verge of giving birth to their first child; and of course now, with grandma dead and her body up top of the truck with the children, what’s to happen to the family?? What will become of the family? These were the facts and circumstances going through ma Joad’s mind as her defeated husband drove the old truck into the produce inspection station outside Barstow. And these were the facts of her family’s life which caused ma to suddenly rise and take control of her tattered family’s destiny. A burst of strength and courage to get the family out of the desert…if they could only get across this cursed desert.
