A life of courage, joy and independence.
A benefit of going alone in the sea is the very near proximity of wildness. As soon as we’re over our head in depth, we immediately lose both our footing and whatever certitude we’d carried to the edge of the sea. Swimming out and away from shore, we begin to question what might be circling below, and the strange ways of waves and currents and undertow. After a while our fears begin to fade, as we realize our mortality is no more vulnerable here than in our bed; in fact, our mortality somehow becomes more precious while alone in the sea, just as it does when walking alone and far from help in a distant wild. Swimming back to shore we regain our footing, though perhaps we’ll leave our certitude to wash away with the tide.
This is my first ocean swim video for the new year. I plan to begin a new playlist on YouTube to host ocean swim videos – a companion of sorts for the desert hike videos, and an extension in the Going Alone series. This particular swim was about two miles in length (round trip), taking me past several lovely beaches, and around a few rocky points. The most fun was swimming along a cliff which dropped directly into the ocean, allowing me to come right up to the edge of the rocks and explore immediately below where small waves slapped against the edge of land. I hope you enjoy the swim with me. Look for much better quality underwater videos in the new year, as this is the last swim video with my old camera. Keep an eye posted for the stingray in this video which are currently a real hazard (due to their high numbers) along the Southern California coast.
My name is Kurt Bell and I am delighted that you have taken some time to share a little of The Good Life with me. I’m available on social media at the links below and can be reached via email at firstname.lastname@example.org
My book is available here:
Going Alone is an independent approach to living, uncovering what is real, and making peace with the facts of what is true no matter how the truth makes us feel. I upload at least one video a week for this series on my YouTube channel.
The Good Life is a formulated plan of objectives and principals designed to help us live a more virtuous life in accord with sound reasoning. I upload at least one video a month for this series.
