Butterflies must certainly be one of the most fascinating insects in terms of beauty, interest as well as impact on human culture including art, poetry and literature. Butterflies along with moths are members of the very large insect order Lepidoptera, which members are famous for their complex life cycles and large, well-developed wings. Butterflies go through several stages of development from fertilized egg to adult including the amazing metamorphosis to fully-formed adult by way of chrysalis. This transformation has long fascinated human observers who may liken the event to important stages of human development or the result of difficult passage through trial to a final mature and very beautiful form. Though their flitting about the garden may seem random and awkward butterflies are nevertheless quite remarkable flyers able to utilize a number of complex flight techniques in order to make the most of the energy spent staying in the air. Mimicry, camouflage and chemical warfare are just a few of the tricks butterflies and moths use to stay alive in the very dangerous world they live in.
