Wild boar trap – softypapa

I often encounter large animals traps while exploring in the mountains of central Japan. The traps are used to capture wild boar (inoshishi in Japanese). The Japanese boar (Sus scrofa leucomystax) is a fairly small species with dark coloration which is common through most rural parts of the central island of Honshu. Though I sometimes find boar mud wallows along streams I have as yet only enjoyed a single sighting which was a mother and piglet. Boar can be quite dangerous if startled or threatened. This is especially true of females with young piglets. Adult male boar are easily identified by their formidable tusks which grow from their lower jaw. During an attack a male boar will charge and the strike upwards with his tusks inflicting a potentially lethal goring blow. Females will also charge though lacking tusks they will instead bite their adversary. When hiking in Japan it is good to wear a bear bell in order to reduce the chances of startling boar as well as bear.
