Giant Mountain Toad – Real Japan Monsters

I discovered this large toad while walking slowly along a dead-end farm road in the high mountains of central Japan. During the warm months I often hear these big toad croaking loudly from such wet locations. However, this toad was silent and I almost missed picking it out while it sat so still and peaceful. The toad was not trapped and could easily escape to the nearby stream via a pipe running under the road. These large toads are found throughout the mountains of central Japan. I’ve even found them at the very summit of huge mountains with no streams in sight (check the first link below). These toads mate in spring by gathering in groups of a dozen or more males to a single female. The males often injure or even kill the female in their frenzy to mate. You can view one such mating event by clicking on the second link below.

    Hi Kurt
Once more a very interesting video! It was a huge toad.
I am now wondering about the female toad’s survival if there are that many male toads (I watched your other video about them during spring time).
    Greetings from Switzerland

Hi Frederick, Thanks for watching and for sharing your thoughts. As you may have seen in some other videos the females are often injured or killed by the energetic efforts of so many male frogs seeking her attention. Nature is rough sometimes. I hope you are having a great day! -Kurt 🙂
